Situated on the west bank of the Nile, this extraordinary monument dedicated to the falcon god Horus took nearly 180 years to construct—spanning from Ptolemy III in 237 BC to Ptolemy XII in 57 BC. Following your visit, you will continue approximately 45 minutes farther south to Kom Ombo to discover its unique riverside temple. Taking its name from the ancient Egyptian word for "golden city," Kom Ombo features a rare double-temple design simultaneously dedicated to two deities: the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Haroeris (Horus the Elder). While roots at the site trace back to the New Kingdom, the present Graeco-Roman structure was primarily built under Ptolemy VI Philometor and adorned by Ptolemy XII Neos Dionysos.
